Stereoviews of Ethnic Subjects

These twenty cards are actual photographs that were published by the
Keystone View Company
between 1900 and 1935.

Only a smattering of the thousands of "views" of the world portrayed aboriginal peoples or scenes.  Most are of situations or places that demonstrated how western (European or American) other peoples were not, and, within that paradigm, how quaint they were.  "Oh, isn't that sweet!"  Ethnic photographs were sometimes used in schools for educational/geography classes. Verso copy demonstrates such educational use. Those that depict traditional or aboriginal people or places tend to reflect stereotypes of the day ("Savages!"  "They were queer looking people!"  "They did not know any better way of living!"). Interpretative copy (verso) for the Greek card is flattering, or at least not demeaning, as is, ironically, that of the Iraqi/Mesopotamian image.
Both countries seemed to be understood as origin-places of modern civilization,
and were honored for that.

All of the presented stereoviews were published by the Keystone View Company that operated
rom 1892 to 1970, having also incorporated the inventory of several other stereoview publishers
in its heyday.   All are vintage photographic prints mounted to a 3 3/8 x 7 inch heavy stock card,
medium grey in color, and slightly curved (a late modification in stereoviews
intended to enhance the stereoscopic/three-dimensional effect.).
All cards are vintage and authentic.
